Tourism in Bhongir

Bhongir is famous for pottery, beetle leaves and textiles. Bhongir also has a lot to offer you if you love to learn about forts, architecture and history! You must have heard about Bhongir Fort built by Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI. It was in fact also named after him and was called Tribhuvanagiri. The name gradually changed to Bhuvanagiri and much later to Bhongir!

Well, once you land in Bhongir, you must first visit the Bhongir fort --- the signature tourist destination of this place. It is built of isolated monolithic rock. It is constructed in the shape which resembles that of an egg. The fort comprises of two entry points that are protected by huge rocks. This made the fort safe and quite difficult to be invaded by any army.

The courts inside the fort are fortified and are beautifully decorated. A moat encircles the fort. Then , there is an underground chamber, stables, wells and ponds along with an armoury. Interesting viewing indeed!




Bhongir Fort

There is also a statue of Sardar Sarvai Papanna at the bottom of the hill. This statue is of a monarch belonging to Goud community. He was a monarch belonging to Goud community - a brave warrior who ruled the region of Telangana and fought bravely with Mughal rulers.

Bhongir town is situated around Bhongir hill (500 ft. high). The view from the top of the hill (from the citadel or Bala Hisar) gives you a glimpse of the whole city and looks quite mesmerising! Some people believe that there was an underground corridor which connected Bhongir Fort to Golconda Fort. The old steps from bottom of the hill to the top of the hill are still intact and you can climb up the hill using these stairs.

History of Bhongir Fort

The fort was built in the 10th century. The fort was built by Western Chalukya rulerTribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI. Bhongir fort was built during the time of King Vikramaditya. Queen Rudramadevi and her grandson Prataparudra have ruled from this fort.

Hanuman Temple on Bhongir Hill

There is a Hanuman temple on the top of the hill along with few ponds too. Devotees visit the temple, especially on Tuesdays, to offer prayers to the Almighty.

It is not only a historical extravaganza that awaits you at Bhongir fort. There is lot of adventure too awaiting you! The Tourism department has started Rock Climbing training at Bhongir Fort. At this Rock Climbing School in Bhongir, you can try learning professional rock climbing. Training offered in this school includes ---

  • 300 feet and 600 feet rappelling for walk-in tourists
  • Training for school students and Corporate

The District Tourism Department organized many cultural and literary programmes such as drawing and essay writing competitions for school students in Bhongir Fort on World Tourism Day. The programme aims to highlight various tourist destinations in the district and also make people aware about historical significance of Bhongir Fort.

Ananthagiri near Bhongir

Ananthagiri is a biggest Gram Panchayat in the Kodad Mandal and Nalgonda district of Telangana. The place is also referred to as Hanumantha-Giri. Gradually, people began calling the place as Ananthagiri. You will love to witness more than 100 Lord Hanuman vigrahas at this place and nearby villages! The place is also rich in mineral resources and is near Kodad. The nearest Highway is NH-65 from where Kodad is about 7 kms.
